Re: Collecting Coupons

Every year, the psychology department holds many researches on different subjects. Before you are asked to plan and perform researches personally, it is advisable that you get into the research atmosphere, and know different kinds of researches.

One of the old traditions in the department is that first year students are used as subjects in researches held by students of more advanced years. Other than learning the subjects of psychological research, this tradition is supposed to assure that you will have subjects for research when you reach the more advanced years.

An experiment in which you take part, and which is 30 minutes long, gives you a "coupon". This is a card signed by the person holding the experiment, called the experimenter. You should make sure in advance that the experimenter has a coupon to give immediately as the experiment finishes (and not accept notes or promises).

A shorter experiment (up to 15 minutes), gives you "half a coupon". Half a coupon could be given along with a regular coupon, if this is a 45 minute experiment. (Regarding counting the coupons, 2 "half coupons" are regarded as one coupon). The "coupon" and "half a coupon" have different colours in order to avoid confusion. At the start of the school year, the coupon colours will be published. Make sure not to take coupons with different colours – these are coupons from previous years which are not valid. At any rate, the top of the coupon has the school year written on it.

How many coupons should you collect?

Students who take psychology as a main subject will collect 24 coupons.

Students who are in Israel for less than 3 years will collect 12 coupons.

Students which were not born in Israel but are in Israel for 3 to 7 years will collect 18 coupons. Over 7 years in Israel – 24 coupons.

Secondary psychology students will collect 16 coupons.

The coupons should be given to Shani Pindek until the first week of June (before the second semester is finished).

You must collect the quota of coupons to get graded in the "Introduction to Developmental Psychology" course

(Those who don't take the Introduction to Developmental Psychology course (because of exemption) must hand the coupons to the undersigned, as a condition to move on to second year studies)

How to collect coupons?

During the year, the experimenters put offers for experiments on the bulletin board on the first floor. Through these notices you can take part in the experiment. Also, some of the experiments are published in the department's website. On the first semester, there are usually less notices, and as the end of the year approaches there are more experiments being conducted. Yet it is not advisable to postpone the collection of coupons to the end of the year, or you might not collect the needed quota in time.

Remember that ethically you're entitled to stop in the middle of an experiment / to refuse to participate in an experiment, etc. In the case of stopping an experiment, you will still get the coupon, but you will have to stay in the lab until the end of the time needed for that experiment.

At the end of the experiment you will usually be able to get a short explanation from the experimenter regarding the nature of the experience, to expand your knowledge. When needed you can come to me about the coupons and experiments (through my box in the department – number 79, or by Email, biu.coupons@gmail.com )

Regards,

Shani Pindek, lab coordinator
